RYA/D.o.T. Yachtmaster Coastal.
The Yachtmaster Coastal certificate is the first level of
examination for a D.o.T. (Department of Transport)
certification.
This certificate will enable you to start working in the
industry. You will need to commercially endorse the
certificate and with this you can work as crew or as a charter
skipper on smaller yachts.
If
you do not have the Coastal skipper / Yachtmaster theory certificate and your
theory is at Day Skipper level you can choose to add a theory
course to you preparation package. We have online and
residential theory course options.
On Line Theory.
Free Trial
The online theory courses are another way to obtain the theory
level required for the coastal skipper Department of Transport
exam.
The D.o.T. certificate allows the holder to use a yacht
commercially including deliveries and taking people sailing.
About the course.
The
course covers all aspects of cruising found at the coastal
skipper level, including, man
overboard, berthing, mooring buoys, passage
making, collision regulations, knots and much more as well as
skippering skills and yacht management. The Sailing exam will
also include sailing exercises such as sailing alongside and
sailing onto moorings.
The course is designed for exam preparation only and time is
spent fine tuning skills and improving confidence and
competency. Students must have a good understanding of
skills and requirements before taking the course.

RYA/D.o.T. Yachtmaster Offshore.
The Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is the second level of
examination for a D.o.T. (Department of Transport)
certification. It is the main certificate used for people
wishing to work in the industry.
Yachtmaster is the ultimate goal
for anyone who wishes to take their sailing seriously and use it
for a commercial licence.
You will need to commercially endorse you certificate if you wish to become a charter skipper, teach, deliver yachts
or be a resident skipper on a super yacht.

wrote.

" What I like about Allabroad is their commitment to
every student. This is an excellent sailing school
and is highly recommended" I passed my Yachtmaster with them
after a five day Yachtmaster preparation course.
About the exam.
The exam usually takes approx. 6 to 10 hours
for one candidate and 8 to 14 for two. Candidates will be set
tasks to demonstrate their ability as a Coastal Skipper and may
be asked questions on any part of the syllabus and shore based
courses to the level of Coastal Skipper.
Students will need to demonstrate that they can take charge of
the yacht, crew and the complete running of the boat during the
exam.

Yachtmaster Preparation Courses.
If you are not sure about the level you are at
but have the required miles etc then we recommend you do the
prep over two weeks. Many students have found that taking an
extra week in preparation takes some of the stress out of taking
the exam. The first week is used as a refresher and the
second week to concentrate of fine tuning skills.
STCW 95 Yachtmaster Certification.
Standards of Training, Certification and Watch
keeping 95 is an international level of certification and
required to work on larger vessels such as super yachts. To add
the STCW to your Yachtmaster qualification you will need to
complete the four basic elements: STCW 95 Elementary First Aid, STCW 95
Personal
Survival, STCW 95 PSSR and STCW 95 Fire prevention and fire
fighting. See
the section on Theory courses on the website for further
information.
Fastrack to Yachtmaster Offshore.
We run 14 week sailing Fastrack courses and 10
week motor cruising
novice to Yachtmaster courses. (See fastrack on the menu bar). Also available
are the Cruising Instructor
and Yachtmaster Ocean courses.
Tom Cunliffe, pictured right, on one
of our charter yachts said
"A great school and great yachts"
Tom wrote about us in Sailing today: "If you are looking for first class
Yachtmaster Exam Preparation then this is the best place for you
to do it. The weather is fair and the instructors first class.
The yachts used for the prep are ideal for the task, respond
well and are clean and modern with all the latest navigation
gear and radar."

Skippering Skills
To be a yacht skipper
requires more than just sailing skills.
Sailing a yacht should be happy
and pleasant experience for everyone on board.
The captain Bligh days are long gone.
A good skipper will never shout at the crew.
If everything is
explained properly by the skipper beforehand then everyone will know
what to do and everything will run smoothly.
A skipper that shouts is
usually covering up a lack of communication skills and possibly poor
yacht handling skills.

Feedback.
"I have only got positive things to say
about the course. I had a great time. The instructors were
excellent, especially Martin & Matt, who really took the time to
explain things over & over again, no matter how many times I asked
(& it was a lot!), but still managed to make it a laugh.
The office staff were always very helpful &
if I raised any concerns with any staff member of ASA regarding crew
swaps or areas I felt I was weak on they were always acted on
immediately. I really appreciated having those two extra days
berthing with Vic for example. I learnt a lot & he improved my
confidence no end, especially with his stories of how stressful he
found berthing at the beginning.
I had a great time & would like to say a
big thank-you to everyone for their help & support. I will
definitely recommend ASA to anyone wanting to get their Yachtmaster!"
